‘The Ninth Wave’ as a Lesbian Rebirth Journey – 2007
In 2007 I fell into facilitating real-time readings of Kate Bush’s ‘The Ninth Wave’, interpreting it as a lesbian rebirth journey.
It was an off-shoot of my PhD thesis, which explored motifs of rebirth, shamanism and emergence within Bush’s music, and drew on a wealth of lesbian literary theory I had read for my MA thesis.
The performance at the Serpentine caught the attention of Private Eye‘s Pseuds Corner (see opposite). My parents were there too. They happily joined in when the journey entered its climatic phase with participants holding hands and incanting: ‘we renounce compulsory heterosexuality’.
I also performed the piece at Lesbian Lives in Dublin in 2008. Here one of the participants was Kate Bornstein – one of the loveliest people I have had the pleasure of rebirthing.
